Homeless Jesus

Homeless Jesus is a powerful bronze sculpture by renowned Canadian artist Timothy P. Schmalz. Known for his large-scale works rooted in Catholic and spiritual themes, Schmalz describes his sculptures as “visual translations of the Bible” and “visual prayers.” Through his work, he invites viewers to encounter familiar teachings of faith in new and thought-provoking ways.
The sculpture depicts Jesus as a homeless person sleeping beneath a blanket on a park bench. At first, the figure’s identity is concealed, reflecting the many people experiencing homelessness who may go unseen or unnoticed. It is only through the wounds of the Crucifixion visible on His feet that the figure is revealed as Christ. The sculpture offers a striking reminder of the Gospel call to recognize Jesus in those who are poor, vulnerable, and without shelter.
Schmalz was inspired to create Homeless Jesus after seeing a person experiencing homelessness lying on a bench in Toronto during the Christmas season. The encounter moved him to consider how Christ is present in those living on the margins of society and ultimately inspired a sculpture that has since shared that message around the world. Pope Francis blessed an original casting of Homeless Jesus, which is located at the Vatican near offices devoted to serving those in need.
Within Holy Trinity Heritage Park, Homeless Jesus provides visitors with an opportunity for both reflection and action. Its message closely reflects the mission of St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities, reminding us to see the face of Christ in those experiencing hardship and to respond with compassion, dignity, and love.
