When I Was Hungry and Thirsty is a bronze sculpture created by world-renowned Canadian artist Timothy P. Schmalz. Located on the stone steps of Holy Trinity Heritage Park, the sculpture offers a powerful visual representation of charity and our call to recognize the dignity of every person.

Inspired by Matthew 25:40, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me,” the sculpture reminds us to see Christ in those who are poor, hungry, and in need. Through this work, Schmalz illustrates the belief that acts of compassion and kindness toward our neighbors are also acts of love and service to Christ.

Schmalz was in Rome the weeks following the creation of the clay original and had learned the history of the Santo Spirito Hospital near the Vatican and the Bernini Bridge. One of the oldest hospitals in the world and was the first in Rome to start treating the sick and lame without payment. Timothy was moved to meet the administrator to show him the sculpture. It was meant to be – the administrator loved the work and wanted it placed on the steps of the entrance where it is still located today.
